A controversial question

Hey there people of Emudevs!

I've been reading up on PC's lately and a controversial question which I often see is whether a computer stays in better shape if it's constantly running rather than turned on and off every day.

What could possibly be the negatives of having your PC constantly running? Based on my experience, it doesn't hurt your PC rather than the opposite that many computer parts stays in better shape if they're actively running. If I had to say something negative it must be that the fan's will need to be exchanged sooner or later.

What's your opinion?

This question is particular interesting for me since I'm thinking of home-hosting my server on my almost brand new PC. Yet I'm curious if it would possibly cause any damage to your computer, since I'd like my 'main gaming' station to last for a while.

If you don't have a certain room temperature it will get hot if you keep your PC on all the time, which is bad. My room temperature is always 72 degrees and my PC is cool, I keep it up for a week before I shut it down. I don't see it hurting your PC; however, I would recommend getting an APC if you're going to keep it on all the time. APC battery backup is what I got and it is great. Power going off instantly while you're sleeping can hurt your motherboard.

There's nothing wrong with keeping your PC on all the time. It might need a restart every once in a blue moon because you will be able to tell the difference if it has been up for along time, everything will start being slow.

I run my win7 machine 24/7, only issue I have is with it overheating in the summer times (but that's because I also live in hell)
But regardless, there is nothing wrong with leaving it running, it just wears on your hardware faster

I must point out though, windows OS' are not meant to run all the time, so I'm in agreement with tommy in the above post about it
starting to run slow after a while.. I will reboot my desktop once every couple weeks or so because I can't stand the lag

If you're running linux, you're good to go

My laptop is on 24/7, I would do it with my desktop as well however that thing is a 550 watt per hour draw at full usage and around 235 watt idle, it's not exactly a Power Bill saver. lol. the Laptop on the other hand is around 18watts idle(screen off).

If you have a disk hard drive, that's pretty much the only thing that can wear out from shutting off your computer and turning it back on, atleast in my experiences, the computers in my households that have been on more have had less HDD crashes than those that were used for general purposes and shut off/sleep when not in use., the one computer that we do leave on all the time is for the google voice service(had vonage before) since we don't use a traditional house phone, it's built just for this purpose so it's power draw is extremely low as well, and that 180gb 5400 rpm drive hasn't crashed yet compared to my history with Platter HDD's.. lol.

So now, it's SSD's all the way!! haha.

I've never had HDD issues and every PC I had I turn off every week or less than a week. D:

I also keep my laptop on, never turn it off. I do have a bottom fan for my laptop to keep it cool, everything is my room is cold! \o/

Like Faded i also live in Hell, but i've got everything liquid cooled so heat doesn't really effect my hardware so much. However, leaving your PC on idling doesn't really effect much except windows, leaving your PC on 24/7 with something running that may require a bit of power is surely to wear your hardware out faster. Components only run at 100% for so long before they slowly degrade.
