Had a long break, looking for help to get back

Hey there!

I'm a guy who used to hang around here somewhere around 2013. Starting from scratch with no previous experience, this was heaven. All the friendly help & support I received were beyond words.

Long story short, I quit because I had too bad internet (10 down, 0,8 up). I couldn't even host a server for my own friends, paying for a dedicated host wasn't an option either.

Now since I have a fiber connection, and also no current games to play, I'd like to try and get back into this. But I'm creating this thread to ask some questions which might help me get back.

1. Is WOTLK 3.3.5a still the popular thing? Any other stable options?

2. Are new small servers still threatened of getting DDOS'd?

3. I still have my old server from 2 years back, would I be able to update the core and continue with it, or for any other reasons do I need to start from scratch?

4. Are there any cool and free CMS websites still available? Something like FusionCMS?

That's it for now, I'd appreciate answers so much!

1. Not sure. I guess it really depends on what kind of content you can dishout to make it worth playing and playerbase. Most people are going towards Cataclysm and up, or TBC and below. But like I said, it probably depends on how unique/fun your server is to keep players on that patch.

2. You'll get threatened with being ddos'd or get ddos'd no matter what. It is just how dumb people act when they are jelly or mad when they don't get their way.

3. Doubt you'll be able to update it since Ace was removed and boost was added, and there's been too many updates to even cherry pick yourself. However, you can download a recent source and move over & update your custom scripts and modifications - nothing wrong with that.

4. FusionCMS isn't free, but I'm assuming you're referring to the features. However, we don't support FusionCMS so we don't keep track of that. Only CMS probably worth getting is Warcraft CMS, but it is still in development. Honestly, the only thing worth having other than a fancy CMS is a simple registration page, changelog page and a forum.

Thanks for the detailed answers buddy!

One more question, do you recommend Trinitycore, Mangos or anything else right at this moment?

Depends on what patch you're after.

TrinityCore 3.3.5 is fine, might have a few DB bugs maybe.
TrinityCore 4.3.4 is not that great when it comes to the database. No mobs have waypoints, Cataclysm bosses and mobs hit for 1-20 damage per hit. Not really recommended from me.
TrinityCore WoD is not worth downloading.

Mangos zero (classic) still is being developed in the "develop21" branch.

Not sure about the others.

1. Is WOTLK 3.3.5a still the popular thing? Any other stable options? Always popular in my opinion, but people are starting to dip in to the newer stuff.

2. Are new small servers still threatened of getting DDOS'd? Ddos will always be a threat, get protection regardless are run a good firewall.

3. I still have my old server from 2 years back, would I be able to update the core and continue with it, or for any other reasons do I need to start from scratch? That all depends on your core and current state it's in.

4. Are there any cool and free CMS websites still available? Something like FusionCMS? We are on strike against FusionCMS. They charge people for a script that is mostly pre-written 3rd party drivers and framework. I don't think any are good atm but one is in the works officially for mangos. warcraftcms.com like tommy said

I know Tommy already answered you, but I was bored...
