How do you find projects to work on?

I'm curious to find out how you find projects to work on for fun. I'm talking about any type of projects not WoW related. Things like Java, PHP, Python, Graphics Design etc. Do you use Github, fork a project, and merge request? Hear about a project from a friend? From other forums?

On the other end how to you find people for a project you want help on?

I start projects when I get ideas, on EmuDevs Git. Most ideas are private, some are rarely public and overall a lot don't go places & some actually get released. I don't really spend time looking on Github or Google looking for already active projects to contribute towards. I'm not one of those people to do that, unless I know the project Owner.

If your project is public on Github/other I would assume if it is popular enough you'll eventually get contributors, other than that it is kinda hard to get people to dedicate their time for anything nowadays.

It isn't hard to have ideas, but execution is crucial.

From time to time i get some ideas which i want to realize.
I'm thinking about creating a 2D RPG Engine for several years now. Now, after i completed my Ludum Dare entry, i just got motivation again and yesterday i started like my third or fourth attempt to finally create the engine.
I also have other plans for the future like finally learning OpenGL or DirectX stuff to create 3d games.
In the end, it's just thinking about things you would like to program and then finally start it. That's also how i got into TrinityCore development. Since my first MMO many years ago i'm interested to develope one. Obviously i can't just develope a MMO alone, but i can modify a existing one. Years before i wanted to create a 2D RPG, but i didn't had the experience for it, so i used the RPG Maker, that's kinda like modifying a existing one. Now i have the experience so i can finally start to develope it. And now, i started it.

So ask yourself: What do YOU like?

I must of worded my question incorrectly, I'm not looking for any project ideas or motivation. I appreciate the answers but that's not what I was looking for.

Let me try to explain this better...

For example, the Unity Collaboration Forums. On there you can list your project and any interested developers can contact you. Or vice-versa if I'm looking for a project I just go there to look for my next project. But those forums are only for Unity3D, so what if you wanted to find developers for a Instant Messaging project written in C++ or Java, etc. To my knowledge there's really no website for that. I want to create a website based off that idea. So I am trying to understand how you would currently find people to help you in your projects, or how you would find a project to work on with other people.

I hope that made a little more since.

I figured that since it was taking you forever to reply back. Originally, you did ask, "I'm curious to find out how you find projects to work on for fun", which we all assumed you were wanting our particular answers to that question.

As far as I know there aren't any sites related to this, however, you could make a thread on most programming forums asking for help on your project(s). Assuming you are wanting some type of freelancer website, post your project(s), wait for a response for help and for free?

This could be a nice idea for a website if not already done.

Yeah I think it would be an awesome website. I just wasn't sure if there was any other websites or ways people would find project team members from.

I seriously doubt reddit would be a good choice, it looks unorganized -- actually, they all look unorganized. Do any of those sites have a search function or categories, OR anything for people to find your project (besides advertising)? Assuming you haven't used any of those sites, it would be a different story besides linking them, mainly since you can elaborate on how good or bad they are. I'm not implying you shouldn't use them, but I surely wouldn't.

Again, I think it would be a better idea to make a very simple, organized and powerful site related to Neccta's original question.
