Thinking of buying a new computer(for hosting need help)

Yeah as my title says I'm thinking of buying a new computer. The reason is because we're getting 100-1000 mbps later this month and I thought I could use that computer as a host computer for someones private server. So now comes my question what would be needed to make it as good as possible. I could probably spend around 1000-2000 dollar on it so don't be frightend to link expensive shit, afterall its not about the money its about the quality of the hardware.

Computer case:
Graphics Card
Ram:
CPU:
Motherboard:
PSU:
Harddrives(SSD/Normal):

I'm probably missing something but ohwell any help is welcome ^^

To be honest I think regular computer parts should suffice. The only thing I'd probably get that would be stronger is the memory (ram), I'd probably go with 12GB minimum, you could even purchase server specific memory. I'd go with a 120GB SSD disk, probably from samsung to store your OS and programs for faster load. I'd go with a regular 500GB/1TB harddrive for backups and files that dont need to be loaded quickly. You can also get server specific CPU's such as Intel Xeon but an i5/i7 would also do it. Either Ivy Bridge or Haswell depending on if you want third generation or fourth. I don't think the graphics card really matters so a gtx 6 series would be enough. The motherboard should be able to take future upgrades if you decide to go SLi/Crossfire in the future and that supports memory from 1600-2666mhz if you decide to upgrade that.

For the case it really doesent matter just make sure the case has good airflow and good fan possibilities if you decide to add more than what you get when u purchase the case, I'd go for a 700+ PSU just because if you decide to go sli/crossfire it would be enough power.

Now I'm no expert in server computers I think Faded or Tommy knows these kind of stuff much more than I do. Good luck!

Yea they probably will, I honestly believe only the cpu and memory(ram) is what really matters, ofc I'm not saying go purchase a shit computer but for hosting I think those are the 2 parts that really need to stand out. I could be wrong though but everytime people purchase hosting they always look at memory and what kind of cpu it is.

Yeah you're right mate, checked some other dedicated servers out there on the market from big hosting companies and they seem to focus on the CPU and the RAM as you said and ofcourse the internet without a good connection there's basically no point in doing it :p

Yea, what I do suggest is getting a new case, put ur current computer hardware in that, upgrade the ram and cpu if needed, use that as a server computer and get yourself a good gaming computer for the money. You'd enjoy it more :p

If you're going to be using it for hosting, just get a bare bone server (NOT DESKTOP) and install a Linux OS on it.
Simple, cheap, reliable.

That could also work, got a i5 and 8gb ram in this one

Don't spend anything on a graphics card, just spend it all on RAM, a good SSD & a good processor.[/QUOTE

alrighty thanks lad ^^

No reason to even get a Graphics card at all unless the processor you get doesn't have any sort of integrated graphics. Even then, I'd just get something very cheap as it won't do you any good.

Newegg has a couple videos on YouTube about building a computer for a server: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuUCd4vSiHo
Not sure if the information provided in the video will help you much, but it's worth a try.

Thanks for sharing the video i'll take a look at it, found a old HAF 932 computer case and a old ati graphics card with 1gb on it. I guess that could work. Only need to buy a PSU / RAM / CPU and a new motherboard

Pretty much what jamey said, and if there's no limit for costs you should get 24GB DDR3-DDR5 RAM, motherboard that supports the DDR3 - DDR5 memory and SSD'S, YES it's good to have more of them than just the one.
for processor i'd recommend Intel E5-2690 however it's very very expensive, i think you can get it for 1700$ minium.

So i guess a desktop processor suits your needs so it wont go overboard with the price.

Well when building computer the processor will be the most costly to buy, however sometimes the graphics card wins the competition in price.

I see your "inköpslista" however I wonder why do you have 2x regular harddrives instead of 1 1500GB?

I removed the the "green" harddrive since its the worst one you can get black one is the next bext you can get except if you want the raptor one but I currecntly don't got the money for that one :p
